“I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” Genesis 17:1 is where Scripture first calls God by this name — and it doesn’t arrive when life is easy. Abram is ninety-nine years old. The promise of a son is decades overdue. Every natural reason for hope has run out. That is exactly the moment God introduces Himself as El Shaddai: not just God, but God Almighty, the All-Sufficient One — the God who is enough when nothing else is.

El Shaddai does not mean the God who helps you finish what you started. It means the God who can do what you were never able to start in the first place. Abram could not make himself a father. He needed a name for God that was bigger than his own limitations, and that is exactly what he received.

I made El Shaddai for anyone standing in their own version of Abram’s wait — a promise that seems impossible, a door that seems shut, years that feel spent for nothing. I wanted this name to be the first thing you see some mornings, before the day reminds you of everything you cannot do, so you remember the One who can.
